A cancer diagnosis often comes with a feeling of having no control in the process. This absolutely is not true. We have much more control than most realize. We can harness the things we have control of, such as our thoughts, food choices, environment and stress levels, to create a more positive, healthy lifestyle where disease has difficulty existing.

Natural Cancer Girl metaphorically represents the Cancer Superhero and empowered person with cancer in all of us facing this disease.

A Cancer Superhero:

  • Chooses to educate herself on the disease.
  • Questions the doctor until she has complete understanding of the cancer, treatment and side effects.
  • Is willing to find a different doctor if communication styles don't match.
  • Understands she is NOT a statistic, but an individual with free will to change the status of her health at anytime.
  • Is willing to take a hard look at habits, stressors, and nutrition that may affect her healing process.
  • Is willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes to enhance her health and recovery.
  • Chooses to allow cancer to serve as a catalyst for change, instead of a paralyzing force in one's life.
  • Understands that she may not be able to change the situation, but she can change her reaction to the situation.
  • Chooses the treatment plan that is right for her, not others whether that includes conventional, naturopathic or an integrative approach.
  • Recognizes that cancer is something that you get, it is NOT something that defines who you are.
  • Consistently asks herself one question as she makes every day decisions - will this add to my health or detract from it?
  • Chooses to laugh at least once a day and preferably more.
  • Connects with her faith, whatever that is and understands she is not alone on this journey.
  • Understands that there is no right or wrong way to treat cancer. Everyone comes to the disease differently and everyone heals differently.
  • Is open-minded to the fact that God will lead her to the things she needs most to heal.
  • Harnesses the power of mind and body to enhance the healing process.
  • Is willing to ask her friends and family for what support she needs and creates her own personal Superhero Support Systems.
  • Gives herself permission to be sad about the diagnosis and the changes that are thrust upon her and yet finds the strength to slip back on her killer kick cancer boots and make the necessary lifestyle changes to enhance her health.

Most importantly, a Cancer Superhero understands that no matter what prognosis is given, she has the choice to accept or reject it. She can choose life.

Diane often describes her fourteen-year journey as a blessing that taught her how to choose life on a daily basis. She embraces the lessons it has taught her about herself, others and the world around her and pays it forward by helping others understand how to become an empowered person with cancer - a Cancer Superhero.
